Saskatoon Freethinkers to stop Sylvia Browne

Okay, not quite, but members of the Saskatoon Freethinkers and Saskatoon Skeptics will be on hand tonight around TCU Place passing out information to those who’ve bought tickets to Sylvia’s show (and anyone else). She is, of course, a huckster and a sham who lives to bilk people out of their hard earned cash all because they want to believe she has access to dead loved ones seeking contact from beyond the veil.

Sask Skeptics provides some information about her failures and the coincidental success of cold reading. They also have a post about what kinds of questions skeptics could ask.

What would you ask?

update 9:50pm — first off, never noticed I spelled her name wrong the first time around. Darn those silent e’s. Anyway, it was a small group (7 of us) holding placards and passing out pamphlets. The few who stopped where I was standing were friendly enough, but the others reported some irate responses to our being there, and annoyance (ie. “You’re taking all the fun out of this!” etc).

One of the guys thought our “psychic or cold reader?” set-up was too vague and didn’t really set up enough interest to generate debate. Then again, most of them just wanted to get to their seats and likely didn’t feel they had time to argue or discuss Browne’s flaws. Still, many people took the pamphlets and likely read them. I’d penciled “watch, think, question” on most of the ones I passed out. Maybe some of those people did just that.
