In the UK it was all about advertising the morning after pill and a brouhaha over increased promiscuity and abortions.
Indiana started offering gift certificates usable for any and all services Planned Parenthood provides, abortion being only one of them – but that’s what the Christian right and other pro-life groups are focused on.
Betty Cockrum, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana, characterizes the response to the gift certificates as “pretty robust, and generally very favorable.”
She estimates that “about a dozen” certificates have sold since they became available Nov. 25.
Illinois will begin offering them next week.
Those who criticize the gift certificates, said PPIN’s Cockrum, are missing the forest for the trees. “We see 92,000 patients each year at Planned Parenthood of Indiana, and 5,000 of them opt for abortions,” Cockrum said. “Ninety-five percent of what we do is provide basic health care.”
They’re doing a good thing here. Considering how expensive medical care is, doesn’t it sound like a good idea to buy some care for a loved one who might not be able to afford a checkup?
