The movie doesn’t come out until next May so first I had a bit of a whee! moment at the discovery of the new Star Trek movie preview, then I watched it and went, Hm…
I guess Roddenberry and company left their histories pretty wide open and every great couple needs to meet for the very first time, but I dunno. But, I guess the author at screenrant.com might have a point:
The other complaint I’ve seen is how insanely brash Chris Pine is playing Kirk – Kirk has never been a “by the rules” guy and has also always been about action above pondering a situation in deep thought. I have a feeling that by the end of the movie we’ll see him mature considerably, and I think that may be one of the major themes of the film. The same goes for Zachary Quinto’s portrayal of an emotional and (apparently) out of control Spock. One of the themes of the show was his struggle with containing his human side – since this is early on in his life, it doesn’t surprise me that he does not have his emotions quite under control.
True enough. Spock had a few episodes where his control was out of control due disease or plant allergy or Pon Farr or whatever. He always mastered it by the end, though, even if he had to strangle Kirk a couple times first. Who wouldn’t? The dude was a dick a lot of the time. Big schmoozer.
I hope it turns out to be a movie worth the wait.
