The animal kingdom was never “IN” the closet

If my passport was up to date and I could afford a trip to Sweden, I’d go to the Rainbow Animals exhibit. I would so totally go.

The exhibit suggests that ideas of heterosexuality and homosexuality don’t exist in the animal world as they do in ours. For example, male black swan couples have been known to either mate with a female to reproduce or chase heterosexual couples away from their nests and “adopt” the young. Can you see this as the makings of a weird “My Two Dads” episode — animal-style?

Not only that, but it might be used as reason for the biblically insane to picket the exhibit as a bad thing for children to see. Look at what happened with that book about Tango and her two penguin dads. It’s been challenged numerous times because people think it’s promoting the “gay agenda” and is therefore “bad.”

Ridiculous, frankly. There’s a disturbing tendency to judge animal behaviour by human morality scales. By human sexuality scales. And it’s just plain wrong. Why can’t people just be fascinated by the diversity of animal behaviour instead of so judgmental about it?

Maybe it’s because deep down, these people know we’re descendants of primates with our own natural animal behavours still largely in tact…
